Chapter 2

“How’d you get in?” Sam inquired. Yet Maya noticed an edge to the tone in his voice.
Leo turned and pointed toward an arched door on the side of the building. “Through there,” he replied. “I heard the thunder or whatever that noise was, and this was the only closest place to head for.”
“You knew it was unlocked then?”
Maya snapped her head around to face her friend, her gaze alarmingly direct.
“No, but then I’m assuming you both are here for the same reason.” The corner of Leo’s mouth lifted into a lopsided grin and his eyes expressed more challenge than curiosity.
However, Sam ignored Leo and continued with another question, “I haven’t seen you around here before?”
“No, I doubt you have.”
Oh my goodness! I've got to stop this before they start fighting. What’s the matter with Sam anyway? Maya glanced from Sam to Leo and noticed that against this fit stranger, Sam’s good looks bordered on ordinary. Her expression dropped. Is he jealous? Is that his problem?  She raised her head, peering out towards the back of the church and on to the arched window behind the altar.
“Do you reckon the …” she stopped mid-sentence. Oh crappity-crap, if I mention the word monster, Leo’s going to think I’m a complete nutter. She glanced at Sam before continuing, “Do you reckon the storm’s over yet?”
Sam shrugged, yet his arms remained folded in front of his chest and his gaze stayed focused on Leo.
“I’ll go and have a look,” Leo offered.
“Only if you’re sure?” Maya squeaked unintentionally and she waited until he had left before glaring back at Sam. “What’s the matter with you? I can’t believe how rude you’re being.”
“Just leave it,” he snapped.
“No, Sam, I won’t just leave it, because you’re acting …”
The door closing with a thud alerted Maya of Leo’s return, cutting her attack on Sam short.
“It looks okay out there,” he called as he approached. “The fog’s still pretty thick though.”
“Great, let’s get out of here,” Sam replied and by the time he had finished his sentence, he had already marched past Leo and without another word, he left the building and Maya behind.
