An Interview With Sam Brown/Character From The Book of Souls - Justice

An interview with Sam Brown

One last glance around my lounge before Sam turns up and I'm ready for what should be an interesting interview. As with Maya, I asked Sam to bring along some photos or catalogue cut-outs of the kind of outfits he would wear or anything else he thought we might be interested in and here's what he brought.

SAM: Asking me to come up with what clothes I
like to wear is not something I enjoy, so Jess
and Maya helped me out with this request. Shorts, shirt,
Nike trainers, watch and glasses - maybe - but rings and
bracelets are definitely not my thing.

Maya suggested taking a photo of my room - not sure why - maybe
because we were struggling to come up with other things, so here it is,
well a part of it anyway, the other part's a mess. Why do girls fuss so much
about my stuff lying around? The board in the background was from last
years holiday.

Yep, I can see myself wearing these.
Minus the glasses though.
Good choice girls...

My parents' brought this ready for when I pass my driving
test. I can't wait!!! It's a VW Golf GTI 1.8 and my life
will begin when I get behind the wheel.

Start of the interview

I've already offered Sam a cold can of coke and he is making himself comfortable on the sofa, resting one leg on the other, as we speak. Shuffling through my notes, I take a deep breath and begin the interview.

ME: "Sam, I want to thank you for coming this afternoon and agreeing to have this chat with me. I'm glad you managed to bring with you a few photos and I can see that your car is your pride and joy. Have you started driving yet?"
SAM: "Yeah, and I've had six lessons so far. They're great, can't wait to get out there on my own, cruising with the lads." He takes several long, refreshing gulps of the coke.
ME: "Haha, you're parents are going to love paying out on the insurance for a car like that when you do pass your test or will you be paying for it?"
SAM: "Hell no, I can't afford to pay for that. Luckily my parents are well off, but I'm pretty sure my dad will get me to do some jobs to make up for it."
Shifting in my chair, I ask my next question, making sure I watch his facial expressions for any sudden change.
ME: "Getting back to the book and the relationships between you all in The Book of Souls, what's you opinion on Harriet and Maya's friendship?"
He chokes, leans forward and slaps his hand on his chest while coughing. I had no idea my question would have this kind of effect on him, I expected a raised eyebrow, but not this.
ME: "Sorry, are you okay?"
SAM: "Yeah, sure, that question just came out of the blue that's all. Urgh! What's my opinion on their relationship? Well, Harriet's always had it in for Maya ever since she arrived here at Wicklesham. You should write a book about it," he said with a chuckle. However, his expression soon dropped. He bowed his head, peering down and flicking the ring on the can-opener with his finger. "There was a time when Harriet started hitting on me before Ben came on the scene, she was like some sort of mad stalker." Raising his head again, a smile warms his face and our eyes meet. "There's no way I'd go out with her though. Not my type. Anyway, she thought it was because I fancied Maya and that's when I noticed her so-called pranks getting worse. Then when she pulled that stunt that Friday, leaving Maya on her own, that was it for me. I've had it with her." He shook his head, sat back stiffly and squeezed the can flat. "I'll put up with her for-the-sake of Ben, but that's as far as it goes for me."
ME: "So that's the real reason why Harriet has it in for Maya?"
SAM: "Who can tell with her. It could be anything."
I think I'd better change the subject.
ME: "Do you fancy, Maya? Because in the first chapter, we notice that you enjoy teasing her, which to me is a bit of a giveaway?"
A humorous glint appears in his eyes.
SAM: "Well what can I say?" He makes a gesture with both hands and a cheeky smile lightens his face. "She is pretty easy to wind-up."
ME: "But what are your true feelings towards her?"
SAM: "She's hot, and that's all I'm saying because I'm sworn to secrecy." Leaning forward, he continues, "I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you." He straightens. "No, really ... read the book when it comes out." He chortles.
ME: "Well Sam, I think it's been great meeting you and I know that you're on a short schedule, so I had better let you return to the making of book 2 in the series of The Book of Souls."
SAM: "Nice one. You just thought you'd get that plug in there didn't you?"
We have a good laugh together. I really like this young man.
ME: "You'll come again, I hope?"
SAM: "I sure will and maybe I'll bring Maya with me next time."
ME: "That will be interesting."
A knock on the door tells us both that Sam has to leave as he's due back at work. We say a quick farewell and I watch as his car drives around the sharp left-hand bend at the top of Whitehart Street before closing the door. Below is another snippet of the book but it's further on in the story. This happens the same night as the attack down by the river, Maya falls asleep and dreams, but is it just a dream? Enjoy.

From chapter two a dream Maya has.

The sweat that trickled down her back was immediately cooled by the wind’s pummeling hands as Maya ran along the moonlit path. She allowed herself a quick glance back to find that the obscure form pursuing her, had managed to gain ground.
“Stop,” a young voice shouted, a boy’s voice.
She glanced back again and her heart missed several beats. A boy of about thirteen maybe fourteen, no younger, no older, could just about touch her if he wanted to. I’ve seen him somewhere before, but where? Her foot caught on a twisted root and for a few seconds she felt weightless until she landed belly down on the ground. Rotting vegetation pushed up against her as she skidded to a halt. Spitting out the dirt, her hair fell forward revealing a vile worm dangling from a few coiled strands. She screamed and flapped her hands through her hair, dislodging the soggy thing.
Lowering her arms, Maya had expected to touch damp soil however, to her surprise they had landed on cushioned fabric. What the hell’s going on? What’s happening to me? Brushing her hair from her face, she found herself back in her room lying across her bed with her duvet heaped under her arms and there was no sign of the worm.
“It was a dream … a flippin’ dream!” She gasped.
Except, this time the dream had been different from the ones she’d had in the past, those were nightmarish and about her brother. This dream had been so real that even now she could still smell the lingering odour of rotting vegetation in the air. Maya wiped the moisture from her forehead with the edge of her duvet. It’s happening again, the monster, the nightmares. It’s all starting again.

I'd like to apologies for not writing on my blog so long. Last month was a complete right off for me and my family as we lost a dear friend and companion in our dog, Millie. This also didn't help me health wise. But hopefully I'm back on track again and in full swing for the release of The Book of Souls - Justice.
